June 2012 SightingsFriday June 29
Quiet day on the water this afternoon, we headed up Discovery Passage - and then through the cirque islands and around Nodales, and Okisollo. We saw the bum of a black bear and a cub, and a few eagles - we went through Aaron rapids, and saw about 100 seal heads! Some of our office staff were lucky enough to watch a couple of Humpbacks playing in front of the office this morning for over an hour! Lots of tail slaps going on out there! Talk about a room with a view!! Thursday June 28
Today was a cold, wet, and damp day on the water but that didn't prevent us from having a good time. We spotted 2 Humpbacks in Brown's Bay and watched as they headed slowly south. They were swimming with 1 minute dive cycles so we got many photo opportunities. We also watched a pod of Harbour Porpoises foraging around Stuart Island, as well as eagles, seals, and sealions. Captain's Quote of the Day: "Who turned the tap on?!" Wednesday June 27
Dolphins everywhere today! We saw approximately 200 Pacific White Sided Dolphins foraging from Church-house to Bute Inlet. There was lots of breaching and bow and stern wave riding; very exciting! We also spent some time with a lone Humpback and watched as he did 15-20 tail slaps. His dives were very deep today, about 8-10 minutes. Several porpoises, seals, and eagles were seen as well. A good day! ![]() Tuesday June 26
We had 3 trips today and all three delivered big time. We saw Orcas all day, and what a bonus they were within 20 minutes of Campbell River the whole day. Throw a Humpback Whale into the mix, 150 pacific white side dolphins, an eagle frenzy at Jimmy Judd Island and you have an incredibly diverse and exciting day. ![]() Monday June 25
Awesome afternoon tour yesterday!! We saw 20 transients who put on a superb show full of breaching, tail slapping, and swimming against the tide in the shallow waters around Surge Narrows! The rapids were incredible and we witnessed 100-150 bald eagles showing off for the cameras!! Saw a few seals throughout the afternoon and on top of all this, it was a glorious summer's day!! ![]() Fantastic day out on the water! This morning's trip saw 5 bears, including a grizzly with two cubs, pacific white sided dolphins, eagles and seals. This afternoon's trip saw about one hundred (!) eagles feeding, along with seals, two black bears, and pacific white sided dolphins! Additionally, we had some killer rapids on this pm tour, moving at about 11.5 knots! Friday June 22
Our 9 am tour just returned, and they were able to spot 6 transient orcas down by the Powell River Ferry! Sea lions, harbour seals, and lots of bird species rounded out this successful trip! Thursday June 21
Our 2pm tour was lucky enough to find the whales today! They saw 2 Transient Orcas, 40-50 Pacific White Sided Dolphins, Harbour Porpoises, Harbour Seals, Stellar Sea Lions, and Bald Eagles. Not a bad start to the summer!! ![]() Wednesday June 20

There were some spectacular photos taken and many memorable experiences created!! All this on a beautiful sunny, flat, calm day! Tuesday June 19
No tour today....this day was dedicated to boat maintanance and boat crew training. In the afternoon the office crew got picked up with the boat and we watched the orcas playing in front of Quadra. What a perfect lunch break!! 7 transient orcas playing around!! Sunday June 17 Just got back from the 2 pm departure today – where we witnessed some spectacular behaviour by about 7 transient orcas! Spyhopping, belly flipping, and a few swimming under the boat! Definitely a few calves in the group, some of which had their yellow still.
Saturday June 16
We had a great tour this afternoon! It was a bit windy out but remember, as soon as we cross the Strait and reach the protection of the islands, the water calms right down and you wouldn't even know it was windy to start with! Our skipper, Joel, and deckhand, Mark, found 2 harbour porpoises, 20-30 harbour seals, 70 Pacific White Sided Dolphins, and 6 bald eagles! The dolphins were a lot of fun like always and everyone enjoyed themselves. Friday June 15
Today was a fantastic day on the water - 25 minutes after leaving the station, approximately 10 miles south of Cape Mudge, we were able to locate 11 transient orcas, who displayed some fantastic behaviour. Behaviour included travelling, lots of vocal activity (which was unusual!), tail splashes, and even some breaching! Mark noticed several calves present as well! We found some harbour seals near April Point (>15), and near Mittilnatch Provincial Park, with some Stellar sea lions (<10) Towards the end of the tour we noticed eagles and several nests at April Point.
The captain's quote of the day:
"When a man for whatever reason has an opportunity to live an extraordinary life - he has no reason to keep it to himself"

The dolphins were playful as ever and everyone had a good time! Tuesday June 12 Lots of Pacific white sided dolphins on today's afternoon tour! They kept everyone amused as they played around the boat and our guests got many amazing pictures. We also spotted a black bear up Bute Inlet. He looked somewhat surprised as he spotted us but hung around long enough for a few good photos. ![]() Monday June 11 Boy did we see dolphins today!! We first came across about 20 Pacific white sided dolphins at Fredenck Island, followed by another 100 up Bute Inlet. These guys were displaying lots of mating behaviour so it was all action and not much rest! There were quite a few Bald eagles hanging around Big Bay and let's not forget our seal greeter right outside our office! He was one of 10 that we spotted today. Captain's Quote: It was a white sided dolphin kind of day! Sunday June 10 Our 2 pm tour spotted two humpbacks again, lots of harbour seals, and 50 pacific whilte sided dolphins!!! They also found a black bear. The two humpbacks were moving slowly south directly outside Campbell River, and they gave us 4-5 nice tail flukes. Same whales as yesterday. There were three groups of white sided dolphins that were foraging outside and at hole in the wall. The black bear had a large wound in the upper right shoulder - possibly been shot? ![]() Saturday June 9 On the 2 pm tour, there were 2 humpback whales spotted, 40 harbour seals, and 70 bald eagles!!
