Bring on 2011

Spring is finally here and we couldn't be more excited!  As the warm weather begins, so does our 2011 season!!

We have some fantastic new changes this year that we can't wait to share with you; the season is already booking up and we can tell it's going to be a good one!

First on the agenda....our all new prices:

Whale Watching Safari - $159 (save $59)
Marine Wildlife/Tidal Rapids Tour - $105 (save $34)
Ultimate Safari Adventure - $478 (save $21)
Quadra/Sunset Cruise - $89 (save $26)

It gets even better with a brand new tour that is available from April-end of June:

"Home of the Grizzly: Spring at Orford Bay"

Join us for a trip up to Orford Bay to see the Bears' natural habitat and to gain some knowledge on this beautiful area, so close to Campbell River.

Upon arriving in Orford Bay, we will be greeted by a local tour guide in his traditional native regalia who will talk about the Homalco First Nation's history and relation with the grizzlies.  You can expect singing and drums!!  From there, a visit to the salmon hatchery is in order and then a tour to see the ancient petroglyphs.  We're not done yet!  Afterwards, we will take a shuttle bus to the viewing platforms and see if we can spot any bears, coming out of hibernation.  Of course this is not prime grizzly bear season but there's still a chance of seeing a couple of hungry bears and their cubs.
The tour costs $159/person and includes a full lunch.  It's 5 hours in length, with 2 of those spent on land.  We're very enthusiastic about this new tour and are as excited as you to learn more about this magnificent area.

Stubbs Island

Another very exciting addition for Discovery Marine Safaris is the ownership of Stubbs Island Whale Watching of Telegraph Cove.  As British Columbia's premier whale watching company since 1980, owners Jim and Mary Borrowman are pleased to hand over the helm to Heike Wieske, Geordie Dunstan, and Roger McDonell of Campbell River.

We are thrilled with our new 'sister company' and can't wait to expand on north Vancouver Island, opening up a whole new area of whale watching adventures.  "We will be navigating the same course with Stubbs Island Whale Watching," notes Heike Wieske.  "The Borrowman family have established this company as one that shows great concern for the whales and their environment and we are dedicated to upholding the same standards."  This is a wonderful new opportunity for us and we look forward to bringing some expanded services to Stubbs Island Whale Watching.  Hope to see you on the water!

Last season we had a photo contest where guests submitted their best wildlife photo while out on the water.  We received 68 entries and yes.....it has taken until now to decide on the top three!  We thoroughly enjoyed looking through all of them and it was a tough decision narrowing it down.  We wish to thank everyone who participated and invite you all to take part in the upcoming 2011 photo contest!!  After much fun and debate, here are the 2010 winners:

1st Place - Korri Vandale

Check It Out

We are very excited to share with you a preview of our up and coming billboard!!  As of April 15th, Discovery Marine Safaris will have its very own billboard along the Inland Island Highway, just south of Nanoose and north of the Departure Bay Ferry Terminal.  We are very proud of our new addition and hope it will catch a few eyes.  Don't forget to look out for it as you're driving up island!

Local Fun Fact:

Ever wonder how Campbell River gained so much attention for its salmon?  (After all, we are known as the Salmon Capital of the World!)
Back in 1896, Sir Richard Musgrave caught a 70lb salmon (anything over 30lbs is called a Tyee) at the mouth of the Campbell River while fishing with native guides.  He wrote about his experience in the British magazine, 'The Field', and word got out about our destination.  Eager sports fishermen came flocking to what is now known as Tyee Spit, hoping to catch the next 'Big One'.  The Tyee Club was formed in 1925 by local businessmen and remains a popular activity today.

Recipe of the Month:

Speaking of salmon, here's a delicious recipe for smoked salmon:

Mix Together:
1 cup pickling salt
3 cups brown sugar (dark)
garlic powder to taste

Layer salmon pieces and sprinkle each layer with above mixture.  Let it soak for 12 to 24 hours, turning salmon over at least once or twice during soaking time.  It's now ready for the smoker!  Yum!!
